Qld: Agreement reached on reef trawling
The Federal and Queensland governments and the trawl fishing industry have reached
agreement on trawling on the Great Barrier Reef.
Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says minor problems have been resolved and the government
will now move quickly to accredit the trawl management plan.
He says the agreement was necessary to protect the Great Barrier Reef, one of the most
important natural resources of the world.
He says it will enable the fishing industry to continue but in a balanced way."
Mr BEATTIE says the Queensland Government will legislate for a trawling cap in the
Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area at a level previously agreed by government and
industry.
But he says he cannot specify when the laws will be introduced.
