Fed: Media companies review publishing after High Court ruling
Media companies across the globe are reviewing how and what they publish after a landmarkruling by the High Court.
Some media outlets are demanding an overhaul of Australia's defamation laws so to avoidany fallout from the ruling.
In a unanimous ruling, the High Court has rejected a bid by international news serviceDow Jones to have a defamation action brought by mining magnate JOSEPH GUTNICK heard inthe United States.
The court has allowed the case to be heard in Mr GUTNICK'S home state of Victoria, where he claims his reputation was damaged by an article on Dow Jones' US-based web magazineBarron's.
The judgment means material published on the world wide web is deemed to have beenpublished in the place it is downloaded, not the country of origin.
Media giant News Ltd says the ruling means all Australian governments have to reviewdefamation laws.
But Fairfax says the ruling will have little impact on Australian companies, whichalready have to comply with Australian laws.
